Bi-color Blenny

For all you saltwater aquarium hobbyists out there, I’d like to discuss the Bi-color Blenny.
The Blenny is the most entertaining fish we have in our aquarium. We only have a 30 gallon, so I can’t comment to any larger fish out there.

You walk up to the tank, and Blenny(we named him Blenny, too) will swim up to you tilting his little head to the left and right, like a greeting, or most likely, a beg for food. It doesn’t matter. This is the cutest little fish.
I love how Blennies will check out each nook and cranny of the tank. They can wiggle their little bodies into the tinyest of holes in the rocks. Blennies swim quite differently than other fish. They sort of sway side to side and in little bursts.

The eyes on these fish are so expressive, they can rotate their eyes around and look directly at you, or directly at the food, their eyes are placed closer together than other fish. They’re always looking around, it’s great. I think that shi is what makes them seem like they have a personality.

Also, Blenny is a pig. Our Blenny can eat! He’s always up for more food, and races to it before the other fish. Blennies are herbivores though, and do not typically eat misis shrimp or meat pellets.

A remarkable addition to any saltwater aquarium. You could watch them for hours, and we have! Blenny is like a little person, not a fish!

A tidbit of information, the male blennies have stronger colors than the females. The female blennies are mainly deep blue with just a hint of color change near the end of their tails. The males have the pretty yellow half. For more details on aquariums and fish, please visit The Reef Tank.

SAD UPDATE: Blenny passed away the day before yesterday. Some alcoholic shots got into the fish tank at our Halloween Party on Saturday. I’m pretty sure this was the cause of death, but he seemed so healthy the day before. His remains were not even his colors and were not recognizable at all. There’s no way to really know for sure. We are definitely getting another blenny as soon as one becomes available at a local store. RIP Blenny, I’ll miss you :(
